Akihabara Bridge Campaign: Akihabara Gets Global With ABC!

Foreign travelers visiting Tokyo's electronics and pop culture mecca Akihabara will be able to find English-speaking shops, restaurants and other services more easily thanks to a new badge and poster campaign that begins December 12.

The Akiba Bridge Campaign will make shopping and other transactions much easier as local workers and businesses display the distinctive ABC badges and posters.

Based on a survey of foreign shoppers from 16 countries in Akihabara who voiced a need for more English-speaking staff at stores and other local establishments, the ABC campaign will promote international exchange. This nonprofit project is also expected to help the local economy.

Along with the badges and posters, this ABC website will indicate businesses that can serve customers in English.

Purifies, a design team studying at Digital Hollywood University in Akihabara started this project and created the badges and posters. "We found out that a lot of foreigners faced problems when visiting Japan due to the language barrier. In fact, we often see foreigners asking local people where they are and how they can go to the destinations without maps in their hand. In an international town like Akiba, English is much needed and so we decided to solve this problem by helping foreigners easily identify English speakers who would be happy to help show the way” says team leader of Purifies.
